It took 6 years of searching. The wait was worth it.
Here is my favourite Raleigh Chopper. That is a bold statement. There were 50+ colours and variants of the Raleigh Chopper produced, however my favourite is to the left. The ultra rare, Targa Mustard 1971 bike. I purchased this highly original example recently (September 2025) from The Retro Raleigh Show at Emberton Country Park. For a little bit of context, I was searching for one of these for the last six years. It was the first bike that I wanted, but was never able to find an original example. After 2 years of searching for an original Mk1, I came across my Golden Yellow bike. Finally I have the Targa and they both sit really nice next to each other.
This colour (Targa Mustard) was the lighter of oranges used on Choppers in the 70s and was only produced for 1 year. 1971-1972. That includes the factory HBR (high back rest), short reflector pedals and Mk2 handlebar grips, to name a few differences to a 1970 Mk1. The paint on this example is so original and fantastic condition. Some parts have been re-chromed, however not over-chromed and still retains 75% of its original chrome. It even has original tyres. This bike came from a really loving and enthusiastic home. By far, one of the best riding Choppers I have owned and it will see many more miles in the future.
Nestled inside my own personal collection, this bike will be the last to leave me. It even holds its own raccoon tail!
Pictured here are my ‘Big Three’. The three Choppers that are secured in my personal collection that are not offered for sale. They are amongst the finest examples of their own breed.
First, the totally original 1970 Mk1 in Golden Yellow, then the 1971 Targa Mustard Mk1 and finally the 1976 Special Edition Mk2. I have collected these over a period of 4 years and are my favourite Raleigh Choppers produced. I am very grateful to own three mega examples.
